I don’t know the full story but there has been a lot of fuss that the government has passed new legislation banning herbal remedies that haven’t been proven to work. Most rational people would say that this is a good thing – if something can’t be proven to work why should it be taken as medicine by people who don’t know any better? There are some people who seem to think this is all a conspiracy theory though, and that the only reason the government is doing this is because it puts money in the pockets of “Big Pharma”.
Firstly, anyone who’s buying herbal remedies instead of using products form “Big Pharma” really needs to think long and hard about what they’re doing. Herbal remedies can work as a placebo, and some may have positive health effects, but the ones that haven’t been proven should never be used as a substitute for clinically trialled drugs. Also, just because something is a herb doesn’t mean that it’s safe to consume. A lot of people fall into the trap of thinking that just because a substance is natural means that it’s going to be good for you.
Secondly, there is no conspiracy in this case. The reason herbal companies exist is also to make money, in exactly the same way is drug companies do. Anyone who thinks that herbal remedy companies are in it to help people are just wrong – they’re in it to make as much money as possible, which is why they’re so upset by this sensible ruling.
